Configure whether topics are required in channel messages
Messages sent without a topic go to the special âgeneral chatâ topic. The name of this topic is shown in italics, and is translated into your language.
Administrators can configure the default for whether topics are required in channel messages (i.e., whether itâs possible to send messages to the âgeneral chatâ topic).
The default configuration can be overridden for any channel. You can also configure channels to allow only the âgeneral chatâ topic.
Set the default general chat topic configuration
Section titled âSet the default general chat topic configurationâ- Go to Organization settings.
- Under Compose settings, select the desired option from the Default general chat topic configuration for channels dropdown.
- Click Save changes.
Configure permission to post to âgeneral chatâ in a specific channel
Section titled âConfigure permission to post to âgeneral chatâ in a specific channelâ- Click on the gear () icon in the upper right corner of the web or desktop app.
- Select Channel settings.
- Click All in the upper left.
- Select a channel.
- Select the Permissions tab on the right.
- Under Messaging permissions, choose the desired option from the Allow posting to the general chat topic? dropdown.
- Click Save changes.
